Obituary For Alan Kent Wagner

Alan Kent Wagner, 69, of Raleigh NC, died on September 19, 2022 at a local hospital after suffering heart failure. He was born in Columbus OH on August 13, 1953, son of the late Harry and Virginia Wagner.

Alan’s family moved to Cincinnati OH when Al was very young. He lived in The Queen City until he was about 15. One of the neighborhood dads started taking Alan and his brother fishing. This launched Al’s lifetime interest in that sport. The family moved to San Jose, CA in 1968. Alan started pole vaulting in high school and was pretty good. He started hanging out at the San Jose State track and field center with Olympic medalists. Initially he just caught their poles. Soon, some of these athletes started coaching Al; and he became very accomplished. Upon graduation from high school, the US Military Academy recruited Al as a member of the track team. Alan exceled at this sport until a severe knee injury cut short his career. He held the school record for years. Alan became an Army officer upon graduation. He married soon thereafter. The young couple were originally stationed at Ft Knox KY and finished his military career at Ft Polk in LA. They were blessed with three children, Robert, Alison and Andrea- all of New York. After leaving the service, Alan started working in the home heating oil business in New York serving in various capacities until the company was sold. Continuing his career in the fuel oil industry he became the IT Manager at another NY oil company for the balance of his working days . In 2009 Alan moved to NC where he worked remotely for the same company. He fully retired in 2020.

He continued fishing since moving to NC. Over his lifetime he went on many memorable fishing trips with his brothers to places such as Alaska, the Sierras, Canada, and several western states.

Alan had other interests including wood working. For quite a while he was a “Trekkie”. He was focused on the environment before it was cool to be green. He liked to understand the science behind things such as solar power, electric cars, and energy efficient home design. He was among the early buyers of the hybrid Prius.

Alan is survived by the mother of his children, his children and two grandkids, Henry and Nate. He is also survived by sister, Valerie Ostrand of Leavenworth KS; and brothers Marc of Leavenworth KS, and Kirk and Doug of Raleigh NC.

Alan’s health declined for many years; and throughout he managed to take it all in stride. A year or so ago he moved into Capital Oaks, an independent living facility. This was the happiest time of his last ten years. He was blessed with many friends that appreciated his sense of humor and him just being Al.

Alan will be interned at Leavenworth National Cemetery with a private service at a date yet to be determined. The family thanks all Al’s friends and those who prayed for him.
