Obituary For Sallie Trice Greene

Sallie Trice Greene never met a stranger. She loved others so much that she made them feel like members of her own family, a family that grew quite large over her eight decades. Sallie began gathering friends as a child in Virginia and continued through her time at Averett College, University of Richmond, and Southeastern Seminary. At Southeastern, Sallie met the love of her life, Jimmy Greene, and together they began a life of ministry. Sallie provided administrative leadership to many churches and organizations over her life, but her most cherished role was caring for people. She learned how to care from her loving parents, Ruth Elliott and Edward J. Trice. Then the Greene family adopted her as their own and provided support through the years. To her daughters, Gayle and Gloria, Sallie gave unconditional love that became the foundation for their lives. Her sons in law, Wayde Vickrey and Jimmy Emory, their families, and a host of grand dogs brought her joy. Sallie was sustained throughout her life by an unwavering faith in God and a belief in the goodness within people. She saw the best in all of us.

We want to thank you, All, for giving Sallie joy by letting her love you. We’re especially grateful to the staff of Stewart Health Center at Springmoor for being her family during the past year while the rest of us were unable to visit. We will celebrate Sallie’s life during a group memorial service at Greystone Baptist Church later this year once it is safe for us to gather. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Greystone Church or the Springmoor Endowment Fund , Attn: Holly Guilfoyle, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC 27615.

Although the absence of her physical presence is a loss, we are confident that Sallie will continue to live and love through those of us whose lives she touched. The song, “To Where You Are,” brought comfort to Sallie in the years following Jimmy’s death, and she once wrote to us: “I am only a breath away. Remember this. Best Love, Mother.”

To Where You Are Who can say for certain? Maybe you're still here, I feel you all around me, Your memory is so clear. Deep in the stillness, I can hear you speak, You're still an inspiration. Can it be, that you are my forever love Watching over me from up above? Fly me up to where you are, Beyond the distant star I wish upon tonight, To see you smile if only for a while to know you're there, A breath away is not far to where you are.

Sung by Josh Groban | Produced and arranged by Richard Marx | Lyrics by Linda Thompson | Discovered by David Foster
