Jay Michael Gehlhausen

With deep sadness and immense love, we announce the passing of Jay Michael Gehlhausen, Ph.D., DABFT-FD, age 62, of Apex, North Carolina, on July 5, 2026. Born on September 25, 1963, in Rockford, Illinois, Jay was the son of Leland Edward Gehlhausen and Frances Marie Gehlhausen (née Schafman), who preceded him in death.

Jay was a man of remarkable intelligence, quiet kindness, and unwavering integrity. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to science, service, education, and family. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Rockford College in 1985 and went on to complete his Doctor of Philosophy in Analytical Chemistry at Northern Illinois University in 1990. His expertise and passion for his field led to a distinguished career in forensic and analytical toxicology. For eight years, Jay owned and operated JG Tox, LLC, providing toxicology consulting services. He was also widely respected as an Expert Witness in Forensic Toxicology and shared his knowledge as a part-time Adjunct Professor, teaching chemistry to future generations of scientists.

Jay proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1995 to 2002 as a Medical Service Corps Officer. During his military career, he was assigned to the Navy Drug Screening Laboratories and held positions of increasing responsibility, culminating in his final assignment as an Executive Officer. His military service reflected the same dedication, professionalism, and leadership that defined every aspect of his life.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jay found joy in life's simple pleasures. An avid bird watcher, he delighted in observing the visitors to the camera-equipped bird feeder outside his home office window while working on his cases. He had a special fondness for the neighborhood squirrels, faithfully feeding them and enjoying their daily antics. He also loved long-distance cycling, cruising, and traveling. He was so deeply honored to have been selected as a Volunteer for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ – Canada, Mexico and the United States (Copa Mundial) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Above all, Jay cherished the life he built with his beloved wife, Lynette Kriste Gehlhausen (née Alcones). Together they shared 27 years of marriage filled with love, adventure, laughter, and steadfast partnership. They would have celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary on July 31, 2026. Jay's greatest pride and joy were his sons, CTR Michael Edward Gehlhausen, USN, and Matthias Joseph Gehlhausen, CST, whom he loved so deeply and supported wholeheartedly.

He is also survived by his brother, Guy (Debra) Gehlhausen; his sisters, Andrea (Donald) Estabrook and Kimberly Weaver; his brother-in-law, Lloyd Alcones; and his sister-in-law, Lainie (Raymond) Alcones Nicolas, along with many extended family members, friends, colleagues, students, and fellow service members whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Jay will be remembered for his sharp mind, gentle spirit, generous heart, and enduring devotion to his family. His wisdom, humor, and quiet strength will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

A graveside service with Full Military Honors will be held at:
Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina
July 16, 2026, at 2:00 PM

Interment will immediately follow the service.

Following the service, Lynette, Michael, and Matthias invite family and friends to gather in remembrance of Jay at:

Jay never passed up an opportunity to enjoy a good meal, and in his memory, family and friends are invited to share food, fellowship, and stories celebrating a life well lived.

Fair winds and following seas, Jay. You are deeply loved and will be forever missed.

My dearest Cousin Lynette and Family, I've been holding you and the kids close in my heart. Though I never had the privilege of meeting Jay, I feel like I know a little of him through the beautiful obituary that has been shared—a kind, brilliant soul who embraced life, loved adventure, and adored his family. I pray that, in time, the love he gave you will become stronger than the pain of losing him. Until then, know that I'm here, thinking of you, praying for you, and sending you all my love and the biggest virtual hug. Love & prayers, Mye & Eric
